Q: How would I estimate the amount of flagstone needed?

A: First decide on the thickness of the flagstone you want to install. If you choose to sandset your flagstone you will need 1¾" in thickness, or if you choose to install your flagstone in a cement base you will need 1¼" in thickness. The amount of coverage for 1¾" thick flagstone is 115 square feet per ton. Now measure the area you want to cover, figure out the amount of square feet that you have and then divide that figure by 115 square feet, this will provide the quantity of tons needed to install your flagstone. The amount of coverage for 1¼" thick flagstone is 150 square feet per ton. Now measure the area you want to cover, figure out the amount of square feet that you have and then divide that figure by 150 square feet, this will provide the quantity of tons needed to install your flagstone. For example a 15 foot x 15 foot is 225 square feet, now divide that figure by 115 which equals an amount of 1.96 ton that will be needed to complete your patio.

Sandstone: A Sedimentary Stone That Is Formed From Sediments

For thousands, even millions of years, little pieces of our earth such as sand, mud and small pieces of rock have been eroded, broken down and worn away by wind and water. Over long periods of time, these small pieces of our earth are washed downstream where they settle to the bottom of the rivers, lakes and oceans. Layer after layer of eroded earth is deposited on top of each other. These layers are compressed as they are buried under more and more layers of sediment and as time passes, the bottom layers slowly turn into a sedimentary stone which is comprised of strata or layers. The layers that are further down in the earth are older than the top layers.

Most sedimentary rock layers are buried under soil or other rocks. The easiest way to find fossils is to find exposed sedimentary rock outcroppings. Good places to look include cliffs, river banks, road cuts, quarries and desert badlands where erosion is escalated.

Some other types of sedimentary rock include shale and limestone. Shale is a dark-colored rock that is usually black, deep red, or gray-green. When shale is wet it gets very slippery. It has a fine grain and is usually found below sandstone, not on the surface. Shale is formed from fine silt and clay. Limestone is a white to gray, fine-grained rock. It is made of calcium carbonate. It fizzles when it comes in contact with vinegar or any other acid. Limestone was formed from the remains of ancient seas; it is made mostly of calcite precipitated from living organisms. Coquina is a type of limestone that is mostly made of shells and shell fragment. Dolomite is another type of limestone. Sedimentary rock layers that were formed in water frequently has ripple marks. Sedimentary rock layers that have crackles from drying mud were formed in shallow water that evaporated.

Sandstone is a sedimentary rock consisting usually of quartz cemented with silica, iron oxide or calcium carbonate. Sandstone is durable, has a very high crushing and tensile strength, and a wide range of colors and textures. The sandstone is formed by deposits of sediments in beds or layers and because of the way this stone is formed, there may be a scaling of the smooth surface of the sandstone.
